The relation among the Quality of Life, Body Image and Belly Dance practice on Adult Women in Brazil
Abstract
Background: Studies focused on the quality of life, specifically on women, are important, especially when they are related to body image. It is noted that in Brazil, life expectancy is increasing and the search for healthy habits, among them belly dancing, has grown. On the other hand, the search for aesthetic surgical procedures has also increased. In this context, the objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between quality of life, concern with body image and practice of belly dancing in adult women. Methods: Cross-sectional study with adult women, students of belly dance, in schools of a city in the Center-West of Brazil. A survey was carried out in 2016, using a sociodemographic questionnaire, Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) and WHOQOL-bref. Statistical Analysis of Chi-square, Cronbach's Alpha, Kruskal-Wallis and Spearman's Correlation was performed, with significance level 5% (p <0.05). Results: The sample with 98 women, aged 20-62 years (M = 32.80; SD = 10.39), presented the following results: 89.8% of the women did not show concern about body image; 7.1% showed mild concern; and 3.1%, moderate concern. There was a positive correlation between preoccupation with body image and BMI (r = 0.52; p <0.01); (r = -0.50, p <0.001) and environmental (r = -0.35, p = 0.02) in women who practiced dancing less than one year , and in the social domain (r = -0.61, p = 0.01), in those who practiced dance for six years or more; and positive correlation between environmental domain (r = 0.29, p = 0.01) and dance time. Conclusion: There is a positive correlation between preoccupation with body image and measures of BMI, and between time of belly dance practice and quality of life; and negative correlation between quality of life and preoccupation with body image.
