Quality of Life of Women practicing Dance: A Systematic Review
Abstract
Background: The objective of this research is to evaluate the effect of dance on the quality of life of adult women with or without health problems. Methods: Systematic review of clinical trials with adult women exposed to intervention of any type of dance, compared to control groups for analysis of improvement in quality of life. The studies were located in the electronic platforms with the descriptors quality of life, dance and women, in Portuguese, English and Spanish, published until June 2017. Results: 700 records were identified by electronic means and two by manual search; 693 were excluded, leaving nine clinical trials for qualitative synthesis, totaling 477 participants. Four different types of instruments were used to evaluate the quality of life of overweight women, cancer patients, fibromyalgia patients or those who did not report health problems, ranging from 20 to 64 years old, who practiced belly dancing, Zumba, circular dance, and Dance Movement Therapy (TDM) for a period of three to sixteen weeks. The studies showed heterogeneity and were analyzed in subgroups. Significance was found in the results of eight studies, with improvements, especially in the physical and psychological domains of quality of life of the intervention group. Conclusions: Regardless of the type of dance, there was an improvement in the quality of life of adult women practicing this activity, especially in the physical and psychological domains, when practiced at least twice a week, for a minimum of eight weeks, without health problems or who are overweight, cancer or fibromyalgia.
